If you are preparing for your sweet new baby, and especially if this is your first one, then you must be feeling overwhelmed from all the products being thrown in your face that you “must have”. And it seems everyone has a different opinion!
Just a little research has shown me that many of those baby must haves are things that are indeed helpful but not really essential.
So all of it can all be very confusing and even scary if you are on a budget. You may even struggle with yourself wanting to buy as much as possible so your little one will truly have everything it needs.
But please stop: not all recommendations are absolutely necessary!
Don’t buy every baby product and gear you see and read about. There are really just a few absolutely necessary baby items that you really can’t do without in our modern world. Keep it simple in the beginning and save yourself some serious headaches.
I have done a research and I have selected five of the absolutely must have baby products.
You Simply Must Have A Stroller And A Baby Carseat
You simply can’t have a baby without a stroller. No matter how rich or poor are you have to have a stroller for the baby. So a stroller is the very first and most important baby product you have to own.
Strollers are often combined with a baby carseat – another extremely important baby item to have. Having a car in our hectic and busy world today is a necessity, it makes our lives so much easier. And when having a baby its importance grows immensely. Think of all those doctor appointments, shopping sessions or weekend getaways – they all depend on your family car.
Baby carseats are often combined with strollers and this is number one combo item to have for your baby. Although you can buy them separately as just a stroller and just a baby carseat, it is highly recommended to get a carseat that fits in the stroller. It will make the process of moving the baby between the cat and the stroller a breeze.
I’ve done my share of packing a stroller back and forth to the car and I tell you it is A PAIN in the behind. So be careful to find a stroller that is easily forlable and easily portable. It will save your nerves a ton.
But if for some reason you need just a stroller then there is a variety of stroller types to consider getting for your baby. Here are some of the choices:
- standard-size strollers
- small travel strollers (easy to fold up and store in the trunk)
- Jogging strollers – these are perfect for loosing that baby weight!
A Good High Chair For The Baby Will Make Feeding So Easy
A high chair will be such a life saver when your baby starts sitting up and eating that way. It will be so much easier to sit it in a high chair instead of holding it to nurse.
It is best to get the high chair as soon as possible, even before the baby is born as afterwards it will be so difficult to find the spare time for buying it. If you missed it while pregnant it is highly recommended you get it in the first few months after the baby is born.
The best thing about high chairs is that you can put them anywhere in your kitchen. They are stand alone, small and lightweight. You can easily move them around the dining table or put them away. So they are easy to handle and help feeding the baby tremendously.
Besides the basic model there are high chairs that you can attach to the end of the table for saving space. These are particularly good for traveling. Although to be honest I’d be too frightened to use them – but I am sure they are 100% safe and perfectly tested before the selling part.
Baby Bassinet Or Crib
Having a safe place for your baby to sleep is essential. There are more than one options:
- You can sleep with your baby. My sister did this with her first baby and they did well. The baby didn’t want to be away from her mommy and felt more safe and slept better next to her. My sister did not get much sleep though but as a mom she didn’t even feel this. In case of sleeping with the baby make sure you have a wall (covered in blanket) on the other side or a co-sleeper. This will contain the baby in a safe spot on the baby and keep it from rolling over.
- If you are afraid you may harm the baby sleeping next to it then a bassinet is a great solution for you. I personally would prefer this option. A bassinet is placed right next to your bed and the baby is near you. A bassinet is light weighted and small enough so you can easily move it around if necessary.
- A crib will be a perfect match as a long lasting solution. Some cribs even convert to toddler and kids bed so investing in one will be a smart thing to do.
You will need feeding supplies from the moment your baby is born. You may think you won’t need them when nursing but you may need a breast pump and bottles to store your breast milk. This goes further into bottle warming devices. Then there is storage for your feeding supplies.
These are the very basics and you better get at least these. Later you may need more feeding supplies depending on the further development of the baby.
You will also need some things to keep your baby entertained and quiet when it becomes more aware of itself and its surroundings. This will give a few moments to do that laundry or prepare its breakfast. And of course it will give you a few moments of rest which you will thank the manufacturers for :).
You can get bouncy seats: they are not too expensive, don’t take much space and still do a great job of keeping the baby occupied.
Some crib toys are also required as well a soft snuggly toys that the baby can cuddle with.
A playmat for baby’s tummy time is also a very good idea.
Later when it grows up you can get some bright and noisy toys for its further development.
So now that you know you your baby must haves make a plan and start buying them! I am wishing you many happy moments with your little one!
