After having the baby you will have an adjustment period to survive and endure. The first few weeks will be the toughest ones but it is good to know that it will not last forever. The changes may seem overwhelming at moments but you need to accept them and adapt. Here are some tips to help you through the adjustment period when the new baby arrives.
Every New Lifestyle And Adjustment Requires Time
So take your time. Remind yourself that your life is changing from its roots and don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ll be a great new mom!
The hardest time will be right after you have your baby, the first two weeks when you return home with it. But it is possible that you will need even more time, but eventually the adjustment will take its place and things will start to look normal and in order. Just remember not to blame yourself for things and if you get overwhelmed ask for help.
Get Help During The Adjustment Period
This is so important. If you are one of those strong, independent women you’ll have a hard time asking for help but remember it is not weakness, you simply need a little support in the beginning.
Start with your husband. He will probably help you as much as he can all by himself but don’t hesitate to ask for things – or his time. Maybe he can get some time off from work as a paternity leave? Don’t be afraid to ask.
After the birth you’ll be physically weak so you’ll need most help in that area. This includes not only carrying the baby but help around the house as well. It’s not a shame to ask for help from neighbors, friends or family. They can all give a helping hand with the everyday chores. Just don’t go overboard with it. If you need constant help it is a good idea to hire a helper, just to pass those few hard weeks in the beginning.
It will be easy to think only about the baby’s needs but in order to thrive you need to take care of your needs too. Don’t forget this.
Take Care of Your Basic Post-Delivery Needs
Many new parents focus so much on the baby’s needs that they forget their own needs. This will lead only to burnout and overwhelm.
Yes, the main objective should be your baby but you also need to be taken care of yourself in order to be healthy and strong for the baby.
Taking care of yourself during the adjustment period will make things go more smoothly. This is especially true if you had a c-section. You definitely need help in getting up and moving around your home to avoid pain in the beginning.
Here are some other basic needs that you need to meet:
- Get help with household chores – you certainly can’t do all the cleaning and laundry after you’ve given birth. Get your mom or sister to help or hire some help. The free time you’ll get when the baby naps for example should’t be dedicated to more work. It will totally exhaust you.
- Get prepared meals – Your mom can be of best help here, there will be a need for cooking and the best way to save the food and make it last longer is to freeze the meals. Or if you have spare time you prepare the meals and freeze them. Maybe your neighbor can help by bringing home cooked meal once or twice a week during the first week or two.
- Have somebody stay with the baby while you sleep – you won’t be able to leave the house and get some refreshment at first so it is important you get some good sleep during this time. If your husband is at work then get your mom, sister, friend to watch the baby while you have a healthy nap. Hiring a nanny is also a good idea.
- Make sure you have enough adult interaction – don’t isolate yourself, talk to adult people that can understand you or understand adult stuff. Luckily today you can talk online to a distant friend, or call someone on the phone for instant support or invite a neighbor for a coffee.
