The last time I checked there were so many pregnancy books that their number can give you a real headache and a hard time choosing one. So I have done a research and picked only the most popular best pregnancy books for first time moms. They all have the highest possible ratings. If so many people found them useful and recommended them it is a clear sign of their quality.
So what are the best pregnancy books to read while you’re expecting? 9 months is a long time period and during this time you have to prepare yourself the best way possible for the new baby. Especially if you are a first time mom.
From my experience pregnant women tend to give and receive advises from each other, but as much as this can be helpful it can also be dangerous in some situations. I don’t know if you have already experienced moms who “know everything” and who will try to interfere in the raising of your baby even though they met you only an hour ago. I find those type of moms particularly annoying. And although experienced moms can give you some handy advises it is best that you get a book written by a certified doctor. After all nobody can beat an educated baby doctor with experience.
To save you some time and frustration in finding the best pregnancy books you can check the collection below. I have been careful to choose only the best ones. Just as if I was buying one for myself. I hope you will find the list useful.
Oh did I mention that a pregnancy book is a great gift for a pregnant woman? Inexpensive but packed with value.
Mayo Book On Pregnancy
If you haven’t heard of Mayo clinic then you can check their website here. They are a world class clinic that hire only the best medical professionals in their fields.
In this book written by Mayo pregnancy experts you will find the most accurate information about your pregnancy. Nothing can compare to an advice given by someone who knows what he’s talking about. You can trust the given directions and not have to second guess if what you’re doing is good.
The best description of this book is given in their own words: “a comprehensive and easy-to-use how-to” guide for expecting moms. Here is a peak of what you will find inside it.
- Part 1: Enjoying a Healthy Pregnancy
In this part you will find many useful information about pregnancy starting from the very beginning: how to get pregnant. Then it continues on the healthy aspect of your pregnancy like what food is the best to eat while pregnant and what exercises are recommended. We all know that pregnancy puts limitations on the medications that you can use during this period, so here you can find information on what medications you can use in order to have a healthy baby growing inside your belly.
- Part 2: Pregnancy Month by Month
I believe you will find this section particularly useful. It’s good to be informed about what happens with your body and your baby month by month so that you can be prepared what to expect in each month. It’s good to know when to expect the first kick of your baby and expect it at the right time. Information like this will also help you track your baby’s development so that you can be sure everything is ok. This part closes with information on the final stage of your pregnancy: labor and childbirth. You have all 9 months covered full of insightful information.
- Part 3: Baby Is Finally Here
For first time parents it is essential to be informed on how to take care of the baby in the first few weeks. As much as caring for a new baby may seem joyful it can also be very scary as such young babies are so fragile and tender. To avoid many unpleasant situations and shaking with fear on various things that the baby does, do yourself a favor and inform yourself on how to get through the first few weeks after the baby’s birth.
- Part 4: Important Decisions Of Pregnancy
While you are pregnant there will be situations when you have to make a decision on what to do that will be best for the baby. In this part you will find advises on what is the best decision for some particular situation.
- Part 5: Symptoms Guide
Pregnancy is a special condition that will manifest itself through various changes. As the body is changing you will find many awkward and not so pleasant things happening to your body. You can experience backpain, heartburn, swollen legs, flatulence – just to mention a few. To identify what is happening to you and to solve it you need proper information. This part is all about those pregnancy symptoms, and to make it easy for you to find them they are listed alphabetically.
- Part 6: Complications of Pregnancy and Childbirth
I sincerely hope that you will never need this section so I am going to be brief to avoid any negative thoughts: most common pregnancy complications are discussed here and how to treat them.
As you can see this book is hundreds of pages of useful information for new parents. You can buy it for yourself or as a great gift for a new mom.
What to Expect When You’re Expecting
I have chosen the paperback version of this book but if you click the link above you can see that it also has a Kindle or Hardcover version. I just feel that the paperback version would be the easiest to use and to flip through. But if you are going to give this book as a gift I would suggest you go with the hardcover version: it just looks better and richer.
I am pretty sure you have heard about the title of this book. It is an extremely popular book and more than 3000 people have left reviews after buying this book – what a huge number. And those are just people that have commented, just imagine how many more have bought it. With these numbers it is impossible to make a mistake by choosing this book.
I took a quick look inside and here is what you can expect to find in there:
Part 1: First Things First
- Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 discuss things related to the very first pregnancy steps, like conceiving and checking if you are pregnant, the smart way to test it or false flags.
- Chapter 3 is all about a pregnancy profile like medical history, family history, previous gynecology checks. If you are above 35 you will also find information on pregnancy after 35. Advises and info on the first and the second trimester are included, like ultrasound and screening.
- Chapters 4 and 5 inform you on health issues and how to solve them, like drinking coffee, quit smoking, being around a cat in the home, exercises, correct way of eating and so many more…
Part 2: Nine Months & Counting
This part is full of useful information and just checking out all the things included is exhausting. I am sure that you will find answers on almost every question related to pregnancy here. Month by month is explained, what is happening, how to handle the changes and what to expect for each month.
Part 3: Twins, Triplets & More
What if you have twins or triplets? Not to worry about handling them with part 3 of this book which helps get a grip of the situation.
Part 4: After The Baby Is Born
The baby is pretty much self sustainable while in the belly. But once it is born it becomes a responsibility of the parents to take care of it properly. I know I was frightened to even touch the baby during bath in fear of breaking something in its tiny body, that’s how fragile they seem. So it is very important to get knowledge on how to raise the baby during the first few weeks. This part will give you all the necessary information to extreme details so you know exactly what to do and to recognize the right things. If not from this book that you find a way to get this knowledge from somewhere.
Part 5: For Dads
As you can guess this is dedicated to the expecting dads and I think this part is mostly not present in other pregnancy books. Maybe the dad doesn’t have to go through the whole book but he needs to check this part.
Part 6: Staying Healthy While You’re Expecting
Various situation s where your health is threatened are discussed here beginning with the most common one: the flu. It may seem innocent for a non expecting person but everything changes with a baby on the way. Get informed with this part of the book.
Part 7: The Complicated Pregnancy
I would like to avoid negative thinking here so to keep it short: just in case you need it you have this chapter for help.
From the above descriptions you can see that it’s a very detailed book on almost all things related to pregnancy. If you decide to get I promise you won’t be sorry.
Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn (4th Edition): The Complete Guide
This is one of the bestseller books on pregnancy. It is also an award winning book and it has received more than just one award. They are all listed on the first page on link above if you are interested to check them out.
This book has a lot of useful information on pregnancy, labor, birth, the postpartum period and newborn care. It also covers Cesarean birth which I believe is something a lot of new moms will be interested in. Acupuncture during pregnancy is also a topic that is rising in popularity so you have information on it as well.
The book is easy to read, with many illustrations and highlighted important information.
Something that differentiates this book from others is the way the authors have included other parents and their experience. Everything in the book is revised so you can be sure that the information is accurate compared to parent’s advises that you get while you’re walking your baby in the park (for example).
This book is really keeping up to modern changes so there is also an accompanying website with other helpful resources like various worksheets and forms. I like to print worksheets and keep them by my side on whatever I do. Keeping a check during pregnancy in a form or worksheet is a great idea.
One reader noted that the book doesn’t cover week by week fetal development so if you want to know in more details about this topic you can always go with the first two books listed here.
Overall so many people, moms in particular, have recommended this book that it is impossible to make a mistake by getting it. I am sure that you will find a ton of useful information inside.
Belly Laughs, 10th anniversary edition: The Naked Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth
Pregnancy can be very awkward for the woman. During pregnancy she can experience a great level of discomfort. And although everybody loves babies very often the young mom has no idea of all the embarrassing and unpleasant moments she is about to endure.
The Belly Laughs is the book that best describes the naked truth of being pregnant. All the unpleasant changes are explained in a funny way. The book is easy to read and although it contains useful information it is presented similarly to the way a woman carries her baby: if she is i pain then that is certainly a sweet pain. A light book that will make you smile along with all the troubles that pregnancy may bring.
Any pregnant woman will love to receive this book as a gift. Very appropriate exactly because of it’s humorous style of writing but practical at the same time. I also love the cover of the book, so optimistic and eye catching.
A little warning: some people have found the Belly Laughs offensive but really it is all natural and way we were created. Nothing shameful about calling things their real name and dealing with them in a natural way.
What to Expect: Eating Well When You’re Expecting
Are you worried about nutrition during pregnancy? Not sure if you are eating the right food for your baby? If you have doubts and think twice before buying some food in the store then you should definitely get this book by your side.
It also has a part dedicated to pregnancy weight – something all women fear. But if you follow advises from this book you will have much easier time dealing with baby weight – if at all.
Note: it is not for vegetarians so be careful if you are one.
Otherwise it is a highly recommended book for all new moms. Don’t spend your time overthinking about food or re-inventing the wheel. Your time is better spent somewhere else. Simply follow information inside this book and you will do great food-wise during your pregnancy.
Especially recommended for women that have troubles eating right or problems with weight and self control around food (and I know lots of women like that).
